Intenzioni comunicative - descrivere una persona fisicamente; mettere persone a confronto; parlare del carattere di una persona (describe physical characteristics; make comparisons; describe personality traits)
If you missed the lesson mercoledi' 15 maggio - here is a summary of what we covered:
- following on from previous week's vocabulary and phrases we used to describe appearance and personality, we listened to the dialogue (CD track 8) and then completed Esercizio 4 pagina 32 Un tipo interessante where students identified which describing words apply to the 2 characters Luis and Giorgio.
- Once we had listened to the dialogue again, a whole class discussion followed to answer the question on page 34 - Chi dei due ragazzi inviteresti a cena a casa tua? Perche'? (which of the two guys would you invite to your home for dinner and why)
- next we looked specifically at two verbs cominciare and finire which appear in lines 2 & 3 of the dialogue. We noted these 2 verbs used 'essere' in their passato prossimo form: Il concerto e' cominciato ed e' finito...
- It was noted that the use of the auxiliary verbs (helping verbs) essere and avere change according to whether the verb is transitive or intransitive. To understand this better, we revised the passato prossimo verb tense again (see handout below) which led us on to the explanation of how to recognise whether a verb is transitive or intransitive (see explanation on second last page of handout) The passato prossimo revision exercises in the handout can be completed for homework if you wish. We practised recognising when to essere and when to use avere by completing esercizio 4 pagina 139 Essere o Avere? More practise using cominciare and finire (esercizio 5 pagina 34 Ho cominciato a...) Write 4 sentences about something YOU have started or finished. Write 4 sentences on other THINGS/EVENTS which have started or finished.
- In the dialogue we also noted use of the verb farcela (Non ce l'ho fatta - line 2 - I didn't manage to...). See last page of handout for a full conjugation and explanation on this verb. We practised its use by completing esercizio 3 pagina 139 Ce la fai?
- Finally, we had speaking practise by asking and answering questions using the verb sapere (to know how to do something). In pairs, students had turns lifting a card (see cards below) and asking their partner whether they know how to do the activity - see last page of handout. It was important to answer the degree to which one knows how to do something. E.g: Sai cucinare? Si' so cucinare abbastanza bene.
- Homework: pagina 138 esercizio 1 & 2 also: esercizio 7 pagina 35 - describe any of the characters as fully as possible.
