Meroledi' 1 aprile 2015
Espresso 3 - Unita' 1 - Do you speak Italian?
If you missed the lesson mercoledì
1 aprile, here is what we covered:
- Revised what had been looked at the previous
week and conducted an interview in pairs [see intervista attachment with questions taken from esercizio 5, pagina 11]. Focus on use of ‘trapassato prossimo’ [Avevi già imparato l’italiano?]
and verb ‘metterci’ [to express ‘how
long’ – Quanto ci metti/Quanto ci
hai messo per imparare una nuova
lingua?]
- To help understand where ‘trapassato prossimo’
fits in with our knowledge of verb tenses, we had a quick look at a reference
sheet showing conjugations of ‘essere’ and ‘avere’ [see ‘essere avere’
attachment]
- Previous week’s esercizio 4, pagina 11 had solicited some queries as to the use of
the auxiliary ‘essere’ or ‘avere’ when considering either passato prossimo or trapassato
prossimo. A quick way is to remember is that all the verbs in the ‘house of
essere’ [see previous week’s ppt] naturally take the auxiliary verb ‘essere’.
However, if in doubt, always check if the verb is:
- transitive
[has a direct object], that is, answers the question what? cosa? [and therefore is conjugated with the auxiliary ‘avere’] eg: comincio un corso d’italiano [comincio cosa? - un corso d’italiano]
therefore in the passato prossimo: ho cominciato un corso d’italiano
and in the trapassato prossimo avevo cominciato un corso d’italiano... eg: passo una bella giornata [passo
cosa? – una bella giornata] Ieri, ho
passato una bella giornata. Fino a quel momento, avevo passato una bella giornata, poi...
- intransitive
[doesn’t have a direct object] and therefore can’t answer the question
what? cosa? eg: il film è cominciato / Quando
siamo arrivati al cinema, il film era
già cominciato eg: un’ora è passata / Ho guardato l’orologio
e ho visto che era già passata un’ora.

- Next, we moved on to reading practice – see esercizio 6, pagina 12 - and in
pairs, discussed content and completed ‘Nell’articolo
si consiglia di…’ – pagina 13
- Because we had encountered the relative pronoun nei quali in the text, we had a look at
the use of relative pronouns che, quale and cui – then completed the practice exercises - see attached ‘pronomi relativi’
- Compito: pagina 113 esercizi 1, 2, 3
Pagina 114 esercizio 4 [remember the soluzioni are found on page 243]
