Espresso 3 - Unita' 5 - Invito alla lettura
If you missed the lesson, this is what we covered:
Following on from last week, we completed eserizio 1, pagina 52, by asking and answering questions related to reading habits:
-che cosa leggi di solito e con quale frequenza?
-dove leggi di solito?
-come leggi?
-come scegli le tue letture?
The next exercise - esercizio 2, pagina 53 - required reading the 4 book reviews [recenzioni] and matching them to the book covers featured. We first read the recenzioni and checked for meaning of some words:
top left:
identita' = identity
vittima = victim
intuito = intuition
cieco = blind
bottom left:
travestimenti = disguises
top right:
cade = lui/lei form of verb cadere [to fall]
ambulanza = ambulance
rimanere in attesa = to wait
camera operatoria = operating theatre
scompenso = imbalance
bottom right:
zanzare = mosquitoes
tormentato = tortured
irresolute = irresolute, undecided
logoro = worn-out
scoccare scintille = ignite sparks
After reading and listening to the dialogue on pagina 54, we analysed the text and noticed that the phrases
-a patto che.......; purche'.........and a condizione che...........[all meaning 'on the condition that.../ provided that....] are always followed by the 'congiuntivo' form of the verb.
See attached sheets to revise the congiuntivo presente.

Esercizio 3, pagina 54 followed where we noticed that the congiuntivo is also used when we use a superlative, in other words, when we want to communicate that something has the ultimate quality eg: it is the best film I've ever seen.....it is the tastiest cake I've ever eaten......etc.
E' il film piu' bello che abbia mai visto......E' la torta piu' buona che abbia mai mangiato.....
Practise by describing something [2 left hand columns] with its qualities [two right hand qualities] - using the congiuntivo presente
The revision sheets above include the congiuntivo imperfetto - this is used when the sentence begins with the verb in the past tense - eg: Credevo che quel libro parlasse di jazz. Complete esercizio 4, pagina 55 - the multiple choice answers are: 5 milioni; di Palermo; il 19 marzo; 20; con lo zafferano; De Sica; un motociclista; un giallo [di Andrea Camilleri]; in Sardegna. If you got any wrong then you practice by saying: Credevo che fosse......[remembering to use the congiuntivo imperfetto]
practice when to use congiuntivo presente and imperfetto by completing exercises 4 and 5, pagina 146
BUON LAVORO!
