- the lesson began with students reading the questionnaire on pagina 54 esercizio 1 Il Vacatest and writing down the appropriate answer on the handout (see below)
- discussions in pairs followed where answers were compared
- following the discussions, students had to consider the question of whether they could or couldn't go on holiday with their partner: Potrei/non potrei andare in vacanza con.............perche'...........
- next we listened to and then analysed the dialogue pagina 55 esercizio 2 Non lo sapevo! - the passage highlights the use of the verb volere (to want to) in the imperfetto tense which can be used to: ask for something politerly eg: Volevo chiedere un favore (I wanted to ask a favour); or express an intention or a desire eg: Volevamo andare al mare (we wanted to go to the seaside)
- the passage also highlights the use of the verbs sapere and conoscere (to know) which have different meanings according to wether they are used in the passato prossimo or imperfetto past tenses: Ho saputo che arrivano i tuoi nonni. (I heard your grandparents are coming)(to learn of something from someone); Non sapevo che hai ancora dei nonni. (I didn't know you still have grandparents) (to learn of something over a long period of time); Ho conosciuto mia moglie in vacanza (I met my wife on holiday) (to meet someone for the first time); Io conoscevo gia' il villaggio (I already knew of the village) (to have knowledge of someone or something over a long period of time)
- finally - practised using volere in the imperfect tense to ask for something politely by completing pagina 57 esercizio 3 Volevo...
